The staff and directors of Lakeview Montessori School are dedicated to providing the best possible education for as many children as possible.

We provide a Montessori education setting for children 18 months to 13years of age (equivalent to preschool through Great 8). Enrolment in all ages groups is increasing and classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. When classes reach a maximum enrolment, waiting lists are maintained in order of the date the applications are received.

Our Curriculum

Music (18 months - 13 years)

Musical studies begin in the Casa classes with singing and ear training exercises and continue through the Elementary class with the study of notation and playing instruments (e.g. recorder, Montessori bells). The Montessori approach to music is four-faceted one: music appreciation; two: ear training; three: notation; and four: playing instruments.

French (2 - 13 years)

All Casa and Elementary students have daily French lessons. Casa students have individualized lessons during Madame's 90 minute stay in their classrooms in the morning. Elementary students have a 45 minute class.

Conversational French is taught at all levels, with the Elementary students also undertaking reading and writing French. Games, songs, pictures and real objects are used to make the study of French interesting and enjoyable.

Physical Education (18 months - 13 years)

Since physical education is a vital part of the development of the total child with which Montessori education is very concerned, physical activities are a part of every day. During the winter, full day and afternoon students participate in bi-weekly ice-skating sessions and in gymnastics classes at Rose City Gymnastics Club.

Computing (3 - 13 years)

Children in all of our classes use the computers in their classroom. Casa students use the computer to reinforce letter and number skills and in general become familiar with the computer and its functioning.

Elementary students use computers for keyboarding, research and practice of skills already introduced in class.

Art  (18 months - 13 years)

Art materials are provided in every classroom. Children are encouraged to try different media and create their own masterpieces.

Art postcards are also provided for the Casa and Elementary students so that they can become familiar with famous art and artists.

Practical Life(18 months - 13 years)

This introductory area includes care of self, care of the environment, and grace and courtesy. Montessori exercises for these include the dressing frames, sweeping and greeting. While the child is learning these practical skills, he or she is also developing concentration, advancing his or her independence and increasing his or her small muscle control. In the Elementary years, practical life skills include activities such as cooking and sewing.

Sensorial (18 months - 13 years)

Included in preliminary exercises are the pink tower, sound cylinders, smelling bottles, touch tablets and taste bottles. These activities, first through matching and later through grading, increase the child's ability to discriminate sensorial impressions. This is essential to reading and writing and the development of the growing human being.

Language (3 - 13 years)

The language programme stimulates self-expression and confidence. Through a phonetic approach, a firm basis in spelling and reading is developed. Thorough training in grammar skills begins at the age of 5 years. Because of these acquired skills, reading becomes effortless and pleasurable.

Mathematics(3 - 13 years)

Math has been a stumbling block for some children, not because of its nature, but because of the way it is presented to the child. Montessori materials allow the child to see concretely instead of abstractly the quantity and later the function he or she is performing. This hands on-approach allows the child to experience rather than memorize math.

Science(2 - 13 years)

The study of science is pursued through real life objects in the classroom. Plants and animals are studied in the classroom and experiments with magnets, the microscope, water and plants are always being undertaken as a group or individually. Cards for studying botany, zoology and physiology are always available to the child.

History (3 - 13 years)

The study of history begins in the Casa with "personal timelines" and continues through time-lines of the development of the Earth, man and civilizations, as well as other particular subjects such as transportation, inventions, musicians and others. Independent study of the History of a particular country (eg: Canada) is undertaken by the Elementary students.  A global approach is taken to study of "cultural subjects". (history, geography, science, music) so a country or area is studied in its entirety. (eg: its landmarks, history, famous people, language)
